SWINE FLU (A/H1N1) INFORMATION

BACKGROUND

The World Health Organisation has updated its status on the Swine Flu (A/H1N1) to the level of it being a public health emergency of international concern.

SYMPTOMS

The symptoms of swine flu in people are similar to the symptoms of regular human flu and include:
· fever
· cough
· sore throat
· body aches
· headache
· chills
· tiredness/fatigue
Some people have reported diarrhea and vomiting associated with swine flu.
Severe illness (pneumonia and respiratory failure) and deaths have been reported with swine flu infection in people. Like seasonal flu, swine flu may cause a worsening of underlying chronic medical conditions.

PROTECTION AGAINST INFECTION

There is no vaccine available against the Swine Flu at present. Antiviral treatments such as Tamiflu (stock available) may be helpful but consumers should be advised to consult their medical practitioner who is the prescribing authority. In some cases, medical practitioners may prescribe antiviral treatments as a precautionary measure to people travelling overseas.

There also are everyday actions that can help prevent the spread of respiratory illnesses like swine influenza. Everyday steps that can be taken to help protect against infection which include:
· Covering the nose and mouth with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. Dispose of the tissue properly.
· Wash hands often with soap and water, especially after coughing or sneezing. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.
· Avoid touching eyes, nose or mouth to avoid spreading infection/disease.
· Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
· If ill with influenza, stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.
· Limit contact with other people as much as possible.

The spread of Swine Flu is thought to be happening the way that seasonal flu spreads – mainly person-to-person through coughing, sneezing or coming into contact with an infected person.
According to the World Health Organisation, there is no evidence Swine Flu can be caught by eating properly handled and prepared pork (pig meat) or other products derived from pigs. The swine influenza virus was killed by cooking pork to 70C, the WHO said.

What should people do if they get sick?
If they live in areas where swine influenza cases have been identified and become ill with influenza-like symptoms, including fever, body aches, runny nose, sore throat, nausea, or vomiting or diarrhea, they should immediately contact their doctor.

Patients should stay home and avoid contact with other people as much as possible to keep from spreading the illness to others.

If a person experiences any of the following warning signs, they should immediately seek medical care:

· In children emergency warning signs that need urgent medical attention include:
· Fast breathing or trouble breathing
· Bluish skin color
· Not drinking enough fluids
· Not waking up or not interacting
· Being so irritable that the child does not want to be held
· Flu-like symptoms improve but then return with fever and worse cough
· Fever with a rash
· Severe or persistent vomiting
· In adults, emergency warning signs that need urgent medical attention include:
· Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
· Pain or pressure in the chest or abdomen
· Sudden dizziness
· Confusion
· Severe or persistent vomiting

Where to get help

Talk to a doctor - If a person presents with symptoms they should be advised to make contact with their GP as soon as possible.

If a person is travelling to or residing in a country affected by swine flu - refer to the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade Smart Traveller site, www.smarttraveller.gov.au

If there is an outbreak of pandemic influenza in the community:
Watch TV, listen to the radio or check newspapers for up-to-date information.

Eat Your Broccoli

3/07/2008 - Eating broccoli once a week can reduce a man's chances of developing prostate cancer, and might even slow the tumour growth in sufferers, a new study suggests.

Australian cancer experts have welcomed findings from a British study which has confirmed the benefits of the vegetable on cancer in humans, not just lab rats.

But they warn it is still unclear how protective the broccoli is, or who will benefit most from adding it to their dinner plate.

Researchers from Institute of Food Research in Norwich, in eastern England, gave 22 men 400 grams of either broccoli or peas a week, equal to one or two portions, in addition to their normal diet, for a year.

Tissue samples were taken from their prostate gland before and during the trial, and the results showed that broccoli changed how genes linked to prostate cancer act.

This suggests the broccoli-rich diet reduces the risk of developing prostate cancer, and also the chance of localised cancer becoming more aggressive.

Other studies have shown that cruciferous vegetables like broccoli may reduce the risk of prostate cancer and other chronic disease, but this is the first to explain why.

Lead researcher Professor Richard Mithen said the results, published in the journal PLoS ONE, were exciting because they indicate benefits from relatively small quantities.

"Other fruits and vegetables have been shown to also reduce the risk of prostate cancer and are likely to act through other mechanisms," Prof Mithen said.

"Once we understand these, we can provide much better dietary advice in which specific combinations of fruit and vegetable are likely to be particularly beneficial."

Cancer Council Australia chief executive Professor Ian Olver said the result was interesting but larger studies were needed to prove broccoli caused the reduced cancer risk.

Dr Michael Fenech, principal research scientist at CSIRO Human Nutrition, also warned that studies had yet to show broccoli consumption affected levels of PSA, the main biomarker of prostate cancer risk, or that it changed tumour cell growth.

"There is also little direct evidence to suggest that eating more broccoli protects you against prostate cancer if you are susceptible due to any genetic or environmental factor," Dr Fenech said.

What is Glucosamine?

Glucosamine is made of an amino acid and a sugar molecule and is a raw material for making connective tissue in joint cartilage. In supplement form, it is derived from chitin, the hard material in crustacean shells. It can also be made from plant material such as corn, known as vegetarian glucosamine.

Q. Uses for glucosamine?

A. As we age, the body's ability to produce glucosamine can decrease and this causes joint cartilage to lose its water holding capacity. The cartilage breaks down and becomes less effective as a shock absorber, leading to joint stiffness. Supplementing the body's natural glucosamine production has been shown in clinical trials to repair and rebuild worn or damaged cartilage. As the condition of the joint cartilage improves, pain is reduced and mobility increased.

A. Glucosamine feeds and stimulates cartilage repair. It's one of cartilage's key building blocks and also encourages self-repair by stimulating the process that creates moisture-holding molecules.

Glucosamine has also been shown in some clinical trials to work as effectively, if not better than some other commonly used arthritis medicines2• Some studies show that it relieves pain3 and this is more marked in people with moderate to severe symptoms4.

Q. Does it really work?

A. Aside from the functional evidence above, thousands of glucosamine users are benefiting from the effects of glucosamine with about 400 million tablets a year being consumed. In fact Choice Magazine found about 75% of their online members who were arthritis sufferers claimed they were experiencing a benefit from using glucosamine5.

THE remedy of choice many parents give to soothe coughing children has been found to be of little benefit, even potentially harmful, and will now require a prescription for infants.
The National Drugs and Poisons Scheduling Committee has announced that a group of cough and cold syrups, including Demazin and Dimetapp, will be available for children under two only when a doctor has provided a prescription.
The committee has found that although there had been few problems reported with the sedating antihistamine syrups in Australia, safety concerns outweighed the benefits of having them available over the counter.
The Therapeutic Goods Administration said in a statement yesterday that reports from the United States and Britain had highlighted potential safety problems if the syrups were used inappropriately or in accidental overdoses. "The most commonly reported adverse reactions with these medicines in children include agitation, insomnia, hallucinations and over-sedation," the administration said.
Parents were mistaken if they thought that because the medicine sent their coughing child back to sleep it must be good, said Madlen Gazarian, a pediatrician and expert in drug treatment of children.
"I agree many parents will be surprised," Dr Gazarian said of the decision to regulate the use of the cough syrups for children under two. She backed the committee's findings that while there was little evidence of side effects from the syrups used in Australia, there were also "no clearly demonstrated benefits" in treating symptoms of coughs and colds in young children, so the balance of benefit versus risk was unfavourable.
Parents might argue that it must be good if the syrups put their child to sleep. "But should you be knocking kids out?" asked Dr Gazarian, a spokeswoman on prescribing for children for the Royal Australasian College of Physicians. Such a practice was not treating the underlying symptoms. "Drowsiness can be an important sign of serious illness in young infants and sedative effects of these medicines may delay recognition of need for prompt medical attention."
Dr Gazarian said most coughs and colds in young children were due to viral illnesses which were "self-limiting". The child would recover with rest, liquids and, in cases of high temperature, paracetamol.
The executive director of the Australian Self-Medication Industry, Juliet Seifert, said parents should not be alarmed if they had used the medicines to treat children.

CSL Biotherapies would like to confirm important information relating to the supply of Fluvax® (inactivated influenza vaccine) vaccine.
This year it is taking longer to produce large amounts of influenza vaccine due to the specific properties of two of the new strains required in this year's vaccine (A/Brisbane-like and B/Florida-like strains) which have low yields, resulting in a longer time frame to produce normal amounts of Fluvax® vaccine. As a result, supply of Fluvax® vaccine into the PBS and private market will commence in April, well before the influenza season begins.
Supply of Fluvax® vaccine to the Government for the Influenza Vaccine Program for Older Australians will commence in February as in previous years in order to make available influenza vaccine to those members of our community generally most at-risk: people aged 65 or over.
CSL Biotherapies has significantly extended its normal production to make Fluvax® vaccine available for the Australian market and we expect to meet our commitment to Australia's normal annual Fluvax® vaccine requirements.
